Addressing the Housing Shortage for ‘Late Movers’

Posted 16th October 2025

There have long been reports in the media about housing shortages across the UK, and now AgeUK is highlighting the specific lack of suitable housing for our ‘late movers’ — people aged 65 and over.

This important group increasingly wants to stay in their own homes or, at the very least, live independently. That’s where we come in. At My Future Living, we offer age-exclusive properties designed with ageing in place at the heart. Our rental apartments are accessible, manageable, and secure to help people live comfortably and confidently in later life.

My Future Living address the housing shortage for older people in the UK

This important group increasingly wants to stay in their own homes or, at the very least, live independently. That’s where we come in. At My Future Living, we offer age-exclusive properties designed with ageing in place at the heart. Our rental apartments are accessible, manageable, and secure to help people live comfortably and confidently in later life.

Mindful Developments

AgeUK has identified several key areas missing in many new developments; namely accessibility, affordability, and quality of housing.

This is why we are passionate advocates for purpose-built retirement developments. The buildings that house our retirement rentals are created with these needs in mind: lifts are installed where necessary, every apartment includes a 24-hour Careline, and there’s an onsite manager for added peace of mind.

Community at a My Future Living Retirement rental development

Community is also key to reducing loneliness and isolation in later life, so with each development there is a communal space, a lounge, a garden or hobby room. A space to connect with like-minded people in a safe and accessible environment.

Living here means you have the option to age in place — but it’s about more than that. It’s about thriving and enjoying life well into your later years.

Location, Location, Location

Today’s we know and understand that late movers are active and discerning consumers. Renting in retirement means you have the freedom and flexibility to choose where you live without the burdens of ownership.

Customer Story: Rik’s Retirement by the Sea

Rik shares his story on moving to the coast into a My Future Living retirement rental

Rik Schmull, a retired stockbroker and former Britain’s Got Talent contestant, enjoys the flexibility his seaside retirement rental offers.

Having moved to the UK from Amsterdam in 1979, Rik once thought he’d return home, but life had other plans. Now, he loves that renting gives him the freedom to choose.

“I love the fact renting is flexible — if I decide to move back to Amsterdam, I can do so quickly and easily. It’s all about independent living, but with the reassurance of help if needed, thanks to the Careline system and the onsite house manager.”

Read more about Rik’s life in retirement, how he left the hustle and bustle of London behind, and why he chose to settle by the coast in Essex — for the best of both worlds.
