Peace of mind in later life: Why security matters most in retirement
At 85, Robina Harper is enjoying a happy and settled retirement after moving to a one-bedroom apartment at Homehill House in New Milton through My Future Living, retirement rental specialists.

Originally from Kent, Robina moved to the area five years ago where she rented privately. She then made the move to Homehill House where she has finally found the security and peace of mind she had been missing for years.
After losing her husband a decade ago, Robina faced the challenge many older renters experience, uncertainty.
Robina says: “I had rented before, but there was always that worry in the back of my mind that I could be asked to leave at short notice. You never quite feel settled when that’s hanging over you.”

Everything changed when she moved into her current home, where she now benefits from a lifetime assured tenancy*. Robina goes on to say: “That’s what makes all the difference. I know I don’t have to go anywhere. I feel safe, secure, and completely at home.”
Before retiring 25 years ago, Robina spent 14 happy years working at Marks & Spencer. Now, she is making the most of her later years with a lifestyle that suits her perfectly.
When asked about life at Homehill House, Robina replied: “It’s a wonderful place to live. You can be as social or as private as you like. I get on well with my neighbours, and we often enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, and sometimes that’s all you need to not feel alone.”
Robina has built a strong local network of friends and enjoys getting out and about, particularly visiting the nearby New Forest. She says: “I love going to see the horses, it’s such a beautiful place. It makes you feel calm and happy.”
For Robina, it’s the combination of independence and reassurance that has given her the retirement she has always wanted. She concludes: “I feel completely safe, very happy and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

From 1 May 2026, most private rental tenancies are assured periodic tenancies under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025, which takes precedence over any outdated terminology used here.
