Cheshire is a popular location to retire to. It offers easy transport links into Manchester whilst providing beautiful countryside and gardens. It’s the perfect balance of convenience and nature.

Cheshire is a county in the northwest of England. It is bordered by Merseyside and Greater Manchester to the north, Staffordshire and Shropshire to the south, Derbyshire to the east and the Welsh counties of Flintshire and Wrexham to the west.

Dominated by the Cheshire Plain, the county is fairly flat either side of the Mid-Cheshire ridge. Towards the east, it rises to the Pennines and part of the Peak District National Park.

Famed for the production of Cheshire Cheese, it also produces salt and silk. It is also famous as the birthplace of many talented authors, including Lewis Carroll, musicians Gary Barlow, Ian Curtis and Harry Styles and athletes including John Bishop and Tyson Fury.

Retiring to a town in Cheshire

Most towns in Cheshire will offer a blend of good shopping, local bars and eateries with parks and heritage. There are some National Trust Properties which include Hare Hill Garden near Macclesfield. A great place to see the changing seasons in this walled garden which has been restored with Charles Brocklehurst’s vision.

Stockport was reported to be in the top 12 places to live during retirement in late 2023. This accolade was awarded due to the open green spaces and parks, transport links and the quality of healthcare.

Nearby, there are opportunities for fishing and golf, along with shopping and dining in the town centre.

Legend has it, that Stockport provided inspiration to the Champs Elysees. In the mid-19th Century, Napolean Bonaparte briefly resided in lodgings located near Lord Street.

Napolean went on to become Napoleon the third, Emperor of the French and in between 1854 and 1870 he oversaw the design and construction of Paris. The resulting tree lined boulevards and covered walkways are attributed to his time in Stockport.

Today, Stockport enjoys a balance of cosmopolitan vibrancy against a backdrop of heritage. Museums showcasing the town’s history of the nation’s hatters industry nestle alongside independent eateries and shops.

Lyme, near Stockport on the edge of the Peak District, was once a sporting estate. It features elegant interiors and beautiful gardens with far reaching views across the Cheshire Plain and Manchester. Quarry Bank Mill in Styal is fantastic to see how an industrial community would have lived.

Cheshire is a mainly rural county, so you will have many walks and countryside near to you.
