Renting in Retirement: Why More Retirees Choose My Future Living

Posted 8th January 2026

For many people, retirement brings a desire for simplicity, security and peace of mind. Increasingly, that’s why more are choosing to rent in retirement rather than own — especially within supportive, well-managed retirement communities like those offered here at My Future Living.

A recent survey of My Future Living residents reveals what truly matters in later-life housing, and why renting in retirement is becoming such an attractive option.

Feeling Happier, Safer and More Settled

Our survey found that 80% of residents feel happier living in a rental, while 70% say they feel safer in a retirement community than in their previous home. These figures reflect the benefits of secure, purpose-built homes supported by on-site teams who understand the needs of older residents.

For many retirees, living alone is a reality. In fact, three-quarters of respondents live independently within their community, making safety and reassurance essential. Half of those surveyed said that features such as emergency call systems and on-site staff significantly increased their sense of security.

Susan Long, a resident in her seventies, describes the difference this has made to her daily life: “It’s the first time in years that I’ve felt genuinely settled. Knowing there’s someone on site I can call in an emergency makes such a difference when you live alone.”

Security, Support and Well-Maintained Surroundings

When asked what mattered most, security of tenancy was the top priority for 38% of residents — highlighting the importance of knowing they can stay in their home without uncertainty. A further 29% said that well-maintained communal gardens were a key factor in choosing to rent, underlining how shared spaces and attractive surroundings contribute to wellbeing.

For Denise Birley, in her 60s, it’s the everyday reassurance that makes the difference: “there is a security door to enter the development, and an emergency cord in my flat so I can always get help if I need it. The manager checks in daily, which is very reassuring.”

Location Still Matters – Because Independence Doesn’t Stop at Retirement

Our survey also shows that today’s retirees are highly engaged, active consumers with clear ideas about how, and where, they want to live. Retirement is not about giving up choice; it’s about using it well.

When asked about ideal locations:

  • 361 residents said being close to shops and amenities was a top priority
  • 293 residents said they would ideally like to live by the sea
  • 240 residents said staying close to friends and family was important

These findings reinforce that older adults are not submissive to where they live once they reach retirement age. Instead, they retain strong personal preferences and expect their homes to support an independent, enriched lifestyle. Whether that means seaside walks, popping to the shops, or remaining connected to loved ones.

At My Future Living, we recognise this shift. That’s why we focus on offering well-located retirement rental homes that enable residents to continue living life on their own terms, with access to the places and people that matter most.

Less Worry, More Freedom in Retirement

Renting in retirement isn’t just about bricks and mortar, it’s about removing the stresses that can come with homeownership. Many residents told us they value being free from ongoing maintenance, unexpected repair costs and the responsibility of managing a property.

For couples like Michael Broome and Anna Harvey, renting has transformed their retirement lifestyle: “moving here has given us a new sense of peace and security. The community is wonderful, and the staff are supportive.”

By choosing to rent, retirees can also free up equity, allowing them to enjoy their retirement years with greater financial flexibility and confidence.

A Service You Can Rely On

At My Future Living, we believe that looking after our residents means more than simply providing a home, it means delivering reliable, responsive support. That commitment is reflected in our service feedback, with 83% of residents saying they are very or fairly satisfied with our property repairs and services, contributing to an average 4-star resident rating.

Joanna Couch, Director of Finance & Operations at My Future Living, explains:

“These findings reflect exactly what we see every day — that renting in retirement offers stability, safety and a true sense of community. Our residents value the reassurance of knowing support is available if they need it, without compromising their independence. We’re delighted that so many feel happier, more settled and more confident since moving into one of our developments.”

A New Way of Thinking About Retirement Living

The findings point to a clear shift away from traditional homeownership in later life. Today’s we see retirees are prioritising lifestyle, independence and reassurance over long-term property commitments, rising costs and the pressures of maintaining a home.

Renting in retirement offers the freedom to enjoy life, the comfort of a supportive community, and the confidence that help is there when needed. At My Future Living, we’re proud to provide homes where residents can feel secure, supported and truly at home — now and for the future.
