Steve Leake
Rewriting Retirement; how one author found freedom renting in retirement
The Crawley author who found his next chapter at Homethorn House
At 74, retired teacher Steve Leake has found a new lease of life in his flat which he rents through My Future Living, retirement rental specialists. Steve rents at Homethorn House, retirement development in Crawley, the town where he was born and raised. After more than 30 years spent teaching design and technology and a lifetime in the local community, Steve thought he knew what the next chapter of life might look like.
Following a marriage breakdown and move from the former marital home, Steve had to adjust to living independently for the first time in many years. On top of that, he was managing the daily challenges of Parkinson’s. What could have been a lonely or difficult period instead became the start of an unexpectedly uplifting new chapter.

One chapter ends, another begins
Three years on, Steve says life at Homethorn House has been transformative. The secure, friendly environment and strong sense of community have helped him rebuild confidence, independence and joy.

Steve comments: “It’s been the perfect medicine. We’re a lively bunch here as there is never a dull moment and lots going on. I’m not sure how I ever had time for work!”
Life at Homethorn House, he jokes, reminds him of the Richard Osman novels, “always something interesting happening, with a great range of characters.”
Steve has thrown himself wholeheartedly into the social life at the development. He rarely misses the daily morning coffee gatherings in the communal lounge, has become the resident quizmaster for the monthly quiz nights, and is a regular at the music evenings. Along the way, he’s also found a new partner, who is also a resident.

Independent living in a supported environment
Living with Parkinson’s means feeling safe and supported is crucial. One of the features Steve values most is the pull-cord system in his apartment giving him instant access to help if needed. Knowing the on-site manager is on hand also provides genuine peace of mind.
He says: “It allows me to live completely stress and worry free, knowing there’s always someone nearby if I need help. Having an assured tenancy adds an extra layer of peace of mind.”
For Steve, renting also means not having to think about maintenance, gardens or repairs which are always a headache of home ownership in later life. The secure, well-maintained environment allows Steve to focus on the things he loves.
Pursuing passions in later life

Despite his packed social calendar, Steve has still found time to pursue his passion for writing. He’s already published four books, all inspired by his greatest passions: Crawley and Crawley FC, where he remains a devoted fan attending every match with his family. He also writes for the local paper, helps organise events at his church, and enjoys the peace and quiet he needs to keep writing.
For Steve, Homethorn House has been far more than just a place to live. It has given him companionship, safety, purpose and plenty of laughter. Most of all, it has given him the freedom to fully enjoy his retirement years.
Steve concludes; “It’s a safe, relaxing place to live and completely stress-free. I’m enjoying life here more than I ever imagined.”
