The county is situated to the north of Greater London with Essex to the east, Bedfordshire to the north and Buckinghamshire to the south and southwest.

Retiring to a city in Hertfordshire
St. Albans is the only city in the county. There are many old parts of the city, then the road climbs upwards towards a slightly more modern side. As you would expect, the city has evidence of its medieval origins wherever you walk. It has a vast cathedral which features original medieval paintings. There is a nearby park called Verulamium which boasts the remains of the city’s ancient Roman wall and ornamental lakes.

Watford is a thriving town in Hertfordshire. Famous for its football club and the Warner Brother’s Studio Park, it offers a plethora of activities expected within a town of this size. There are a vast number of shops in its Atria shopping centre along with a food court. Venturing further away from the town centre, you can find nature reserves and museums. Bushey is a short distance away with its quaint row of independent shops and restaurants.

Bishop’s Stortford is a historic market town with many picturesque walks and buildings. It feels like you’re miles away from the capital of England, when in fact, you can be in London Liverpool Station in around 35 minutes. The best of both worlds!
Cheshunt is a modern town in the borough of Broxbourne, a mere 13 miles north of London. Originally a village, the heart is full of history. In fact, Elizabeth 1st lived here during her time as Princess. Much of this town centre is a conservation area and has some wonderful architecture to admire.
Hertfordshire offers retirees an eclectic range of activities on its doorstep. From enjoying the rural, historic features the county has to offer, with being a stone’s throw from the centre of London, it’s a great place to enjoy retirement.
