Come together and celebrate The Platinum Jubilee

Posted 20th May 2022

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will see the whole country come together in celebration of her amazing 70 years of service.

This is the first time a British monarch has achieved this and to honour the occasion there is an extra bank holiday this year which will fall on Friday 3 June. The late May bank holiday has been moved to Thursday 2 June 2022, giving an extra-long bank holiday weekend!

Sunday 5June 2022 is the day for The Big Jubilee Lunch which is being organised by the Eden Project as part of the official celebrations. This once in a lifetime event is all about communities and is encouraging everyone to take to their streets, gardens and neighbourhoods to share friendship, fun and food!

Thousands of events, including street parties, will be taking place up and down the country. You can find out what is happening near you by visiting the events page on the Platinum Jubilee web site. Also, the Eden Project is encouraging people to sign up for a free pack which offers tips and suggestions for organising an event.

For our residents in a retirement community, it’s a great opportunity to throw a party too and we expect many are already in the throes of organising something. With communal gardens and lounges in most developments there is ample space for putting on a tea party or special Jubilee lunch.

If you are thinking about having a Jubilee party in your development here are some ideas:

Come together with a plan

If the development isn’t already planning something, why don’t you canvass your neighbours and see who might be interested in doing something? Organise a coffee morning in the next few weeks to get people together to come up with a plan of action in the countdown till June.

Royal flavours

If a tea party or lunch is on the cards come up with some ideas about what food could be prepared that has a Royal theme and plan a menu. Think coronation chicken – a dish that was first served at the Queen’s coronation banquet in 1953, King Edward potato salad, Victoria sponge and Queen Mother Cake, but also traditional British dishes such as strawberries and cream and fish and chips!

Decorations for the lounge and garden

Think about how you can decorate the communal lounge and garden with a Jubilee and typically British theme. Union Jack flags, paper pinwheels, balloons, bunting and fairy lights can all be purchased cheaply from sites such as Etsy and Amazon, or check out your local high street to see what you can find to create a fantastic atmosphere. There will be speciality Jubilee paper plates, mugs and glasses available too so why not splash out on these too.

Entertainment

As well as coming together for some food and drink, why not consider some extra entertainment? Maybe someone in your development is good at singing or playing an instrument and could give a short performance? Or how about running royal themed quiz? A selection of games could be available for people to play too. Remember to organise some background music with a royal theme to be played during the party too!

These are just a few thoughts on for how you could make the most of the Jubilee weekend in your development. We’d love to hear about what plans you have and see any photos from any event you hold. You can email these too [email protected]
